We sometimes need to replace our old touchscreens with new ones. So how do we import data from the old touchscreen to the new one?
The safest way to transfer programs from an old touchscreen to a new one is to back up the data using a USB drive and then restore it. However, this requires that the new and old touchscreens be identical (even the order numbers must be the same). The general process is: Prepare a small-capacity FAT32 formatted USB drive → Back up the programs from the old touchscreen to the USB drive → Unplug the USB drive and plug it into the new touchscreen → Enter the system menu and perform a restore/download. The operation method varies depending on the brand; below, we’ll break it down for common brands.
General USB Drive Transfer Steps
Prepare a USB drive: Capacity 32GB or less (some brands recommend 8GB or less), formatted as FAT or FAT32. Do not put other program files on the USB drive.
Backing up on the old screen: Insert the USB drive and enter the system menu (many brands require quickly tapping the screen during startup, or alternating between tapping the top right and bottom left corners within 0.5 seconds), find the “Backup/Upload” option, and save the program to the USB drive.
Restoring on the new screen: Unplug the USB drive and plug it into the new screen. Enter the system menu using the same method, select “Restore/Download,” and choose the backup file on the USB drive to execute.
Complete: Wait for the progress bar to complete, the new screen will automatically restart, and then unplug the USB drive.
When operating, be sure to carefully select either “Backup” or “Restore,” as selecting the wrong option may overwrite the programs on the new screen.
Specific Operations for Common Brands
The entry points and file formats vary significantly between brands. Below are the procedures for mainstream brands:
Pro-face:
After creating a bootloader using a USB drive, alternately tap diagonally on the screen to enter the Memory Loader Tool. On the old screen, select Upload for backup; on the new screen, select Download for recovery. The backup file is in .cml format.
MCGS :
Insert the USB drive and restart. When the progress bar appears, quickly tap to enter “System Maintenance” → “Backup System Information.” On the new screen, select “Restore System Information.”
Siemens:
Use ProSave software for backup and recovery. Backup files can only be restored to screens with the exact same order number. If an older model is discontinued and replaced with a newer model, the programs are generally not directly interchangeable.
Weintek:
Program files may need to be converted using EB Pro software before downloading. Note that EB8000 and EB PRO are one-way conversions, and some functions may be lost.
Key Restrictions: Confirm Before You Act
The new screen model must be exactly the same as the old screen: Backup programs can generally only be restored to screens of the same model (exactly the same order number). Changing the model may result in incompatibility.
Different brands are not compatible: Each brand of touchscreen uses its own proprietary runtime software. Kunlun Tongtai’s programs cannot be used on Siemens screens, and vice versa.
Original program loss: If “Allow rollback” was not selected initially, the backup program can only be restored as is; it cannot be edited or have its model number changed.
